The Four Lands is described richly by Brooks and the characters are interesting and the book overall draws you into quest for the Sword of Shannara. Although this original novel does have some similar elements and plot lines to Lord of the Rings, it by its own right a really good story. The Sword of Shannara is an epic fantasy with Elves, Dwarves, Trolls, Gnomes and magic and a coming of age protagonist must go on a perilous quest with companions to rescue the world from a dark lord. I have to say that I enjoy Terry Brooks' earlier work much more then the recent books. I recently reread the Sword of Shannara and remembered why I like the series so much in the first place.
I first read the Sword of Shannara in high school at the age of 16 and have been a big fan of the Shannara series since then.
